You can ask them questions like:

Do they like taking pictures?

Do they find that photographs properly "tell" the story of what happened?

Have they had the experience of someone seeing one of their pictures and seeing things in the photograph that they as the photographer hadn't seen?

Step 2: Honorable Discharge

Split campers in small groups of 10-12. Show them the photograph Honorable Discharge.

Ask the campers to take a few minutes to write down 10 observations about the photograph: 5 objective observations and 5 subjective observations.

Explain that an objective observation is something that doesn't change from person to person – it is something you can all agree on. For example, there are two men in the photograph, the photograph is in black and white, etc.

Explain that a subjective observation is an opinion, a feeling, or an interpretation based on what you see. Such as, “it reminds me of the time I did x”, or, “I think that man might feel sad,” or “I think he looks poor.”

Ask for the campers to share their observations -- be sure to point out when someone makes a subjective observation instead of an objective one.

Next, have the campers share their subjective observations. Ask the campers:

What do you think the photographer was trying to capture with this photograph? Why?

What do you think this picture is actually of – what historic event is it actually documenting?

Explain that the photograph was taken by an Israeli photographer named Zion Ozeri and share with the campers the title and story of the photograph:

Honorable Discharge, Ben-Gurion Airport, Israel, 1992

Look at the expression on this man's face. How would you describe it -- fear, sadness, confusion, joy? He has just arrived in Israel from the former Soviet Union. Under communism, Soviet Jews were not allowed to practice their religion openly and were often denied the right to immigrate to the U.S. or Israel. But after Gorbachev (the Soviet president) opened the doors to emigration in 1989, hundreds of thousands of Jews from the former Soviet Union flocked to Israel, with the help of Jews around the world.

These immigrants often arrived with very little and faced many challenges in their new homes. But the man in this picture had brought something very precious with him: the military medals he wears with pride. They serve as a reminder of his previous life, of the risks he took fighting for his country. They might not mean much in his new life in Israel, but these medals clearly have a very personal significance to him.

The photographer, Zion Ozeri, explains: "I call it honorable discharge. He was obviously discharged from the Russian army. And many Jews, by the way, either sacrificed their lives or fought heroically during World War II... I always look for the image that would define the moment. I sort of saw it in his face... You see the flag, you see EL-AL, and that look."

Ask the campers:

Have you ever heard of the phrase, “A picture’s worth a thousand words?” When someone uses that phrase, what do you think they mean?

Do you see how Zion Ozeri constructed this photograph to tell a powerful story?

Note: The idea that we are trying to reveal is that photographs or other primary sources are less important as objective fact pieces, and more important as vehicles for stories and connection. Every photograph is created with a certain degree of intention: the photographer picked the angles, set-up, subjects, and finally, to release the photograph. As a viewer, we see the photographs through the lens of our own experiences with the elements in the photograph.

Step 3: Photographs from Moments in Recent History

Split the campers into small groups and ask them to choose from one of the pictures that we provided (printed on cardstock). All of the photos are depicting events from within the last twenty years.

Once the groups have selected their cardstock photo, hand them a packet that includes all the photos with contextual information about each. Groups should also take an envelope consisting of different possible captions for the photo.

Instruct the groups to spend 5-10 minutes looking at the cardstock photo, reading the contextual information about it, and picking a caption to go with the photo.

Come back together and share.

During the sharing, have each group describe why they chose their picture, what they saw in the photograph and why the chose the caption they chose.

Step 4: Wrap-Up

Explain to the campers: photographs or other primary sources are less important as objective fact pieces, and more important as vehicles for stories and connection.

Reinforce the idea that in storytelling, especially Israel storytelling, there is no such thing as objectivity; and, in fact, there is power in embracing and owning your own personal, subjective story.

Every photograph is created with a certain degree of intention: the photographer picked the angles, set-up, subjects, and finally, to release the photograph.

As a viewer, we see the photographs through the lens of our own experiences with the elements in the photograph.

Variations:

Variations in Content:

The entire second part of this activity (after looking at the Honorable Discharge photograph) can also be done with other collections of photographs. Ask your Israelis on staff, or Americans, if they have photographs that particularly speak to them about events in recent Israeli history. Keep in mind the type of story that the photograph is telling and make sure it is appropriate!

You can also do this activity with photographs from other periods in Israeli history.

Variations in Format:

If your campers are really into storytelling, let them construct stories for the people in the photographs, imagine lives for them out of the flat black-and-white images. When they imagine these stories, they are engaging more fully in the photograph and analyzing it more closely. They are also putting themselves into the story of Israeli history: how would they have felt in that moment, in that time?

If your campers have already done the subjective/objective exercise, you can try another introduction to the photographs, or just refer to that program before starting with the new pictures.

If you are doing this activity through a photography class at camp, there are many follow-up activities that you can create, including having campers:

Take self portraits

Take pictures of Israeli symbols or elements of camp and bring them back to discuss

Background As they name things, ask them first if they know why it's in the portrait, and if they don't, you can fill in the information about Ben-Gurion (listed below). Each time you give an explanation, you can also ask what they think -- they may have ideas of their own:

Face made of sand, twigs as hair/eye brows -- Ben-Gurion was a big believer in the Negev desert, and the importance of making the desert bloom to the survival of Israel. After he stopped being the Prime Minister, he retired to Sde Boker in the Negev. The major Israeli university in the South is Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Sheva.

Newspaper -- He is holding a copy of Ha'aretz (literally "the land" and also the name of a major Israeli paper) announcing the creation of the state. This portrait is showing a moment in his career, the moment after he declares the Jewish state on May 14, 1948.

Photograph of people dancing -- this is an actual photograph of the people who danced and celebrated after the announcement of the Jewish state.

Nose made of boxing glove -- he was always considered a fighter

Bathroom -- this is a question you can throw back at them. We often think that the reason Piven put him in the bathroom is because this shows that Ben-Gurion was always so busy that the only time he could take to read the paper was in the bathroom!

3. Yitzhak Rabin

This is an example of a picture that relies on a single story, a single moment. While your campers can try to guess who is in the picture and what it represents, chances are they won't know, so they'll need you to tell the story.

Start by telling them a few important things about Rabin.

Explain that Piven created this picture just after Rabin's assassination. If necessary, fill in information about his assassination -- including the presence of candles all over Rabin's square immediately after the event:

Rabin was elected as Prime Minister for a 2nd term in 1992. During his second term in office, Rabin focused on creating peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. He played a leading role in the signing of the Oslo Accords, which granted the Palestinian National Authority partial control over parts of the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

For his role in the creation of the Oslo Accords, Rabin was awarded the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize. The accords, however, greatly divided Israeli society with some seeing Rabin as a hero for advancing the cause of peace and some seeing him as giving away land they viewed as belonging to Israel.

On the evening of November 4, 1995, Rabin was assassinated by a radical Jewish man who opposed the signing of the Oslo Accords. Rabin had been attending a mass peace rally in what is now known as Rabin Square, located in the middle of Tel Aviv. When the rally ended, Rabin walked down the city hall steps toward his car, at which point he was assassinated. Rabin’s assassination came as a great shock to the Israeli public and much of the rest of the world. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis came to the square where Rabin was assassinated to mourn his death by lighting memorial candles and singing peace songs.

Ask the campers: Can you figure out why Piven created the portrait in this way? What do you think his head is made of? (Candle wax). This is an example of a portrait that tells the story of one moment in someone's life -- in this case his death.

Stage 3: Creating Portraits

Finding meaningful objects:

Place a wide array of random objects on a table in front of your campers.

Ask the campers to take five minutes and to select one item that symbolizes something they like a lot, and one item that symbolizes something they dislike.

Once everyone has made a selection, invite everyone to share what they chose and their reasoning.

Navigate this conversation carefully, with an eye toward making everyone feel comfortable sharing and eager to express themselves through these and other objects.

Next, tell the campers that it's time for them to create their own self-portrait.

Distribute pieces of poster board (about 20" x 24") to each of the campers and invite them to visit the table filled with random objects again.

Depending on how much you want to guide the outcome of the activity, you can pepper the group with questions and ideas as they work, encouraging them to focus on aspects of their lives and personalities -- or you can let them work as they see fit, emphasizing whatever parts of their lives they choose.

Art staff should be on hand to help with glue guns, but should be briefed so they encourage campers to express themselves freely and honestly.

Allow about 30 minutes for campers to create their own portraits, and another 15 minutes for everyone to share their work with the group.

Stage 4: Wrap Up

This activity can be structured in many ways. When you're done with all that you plan to do, encourage campers to discuss the experience.

What did you learn about yourself?

What did you learn about your friends and other people at camp?

How would you describe Hanoch Piven's style if you were talking on the phone to someone who could not see the portraits? What would you say you like or dislike about the style?

What's the funniest object you saw in your or someone else's portrait?

The takeaways from these activities should include the tangible pride that comes from seeing one's work on display. Portraits and pictures should be featured prominently in a place of pride for the entire camp community to see, and included on the website and parent communication.

Variations:

The possibilities are endless. Several variations are included below. Feel free to try other things, using as many of Piven's works as you'd like. Just be sure to share your successes with us so other camps can benefit from your creativity!

The Israelis We Know

Instead of having campers create portraits of themselves, have them create portraits of their schlichim as a way of getting them to learn more about the Israeli staff.

Ask the group how they would create a portrait of a specific Israeli who they know, but they don't know all that well. Look for suggestions about ways to get to know the person better.

Now, announce the next part of this activity: working in small groups, you will create portraits of the Israeli staff at camp. In order to do this, you will need to interview each Israeli before they set about doing the job.

Divide campers into small groups and assign each group to one Israeli staff member who they will be interviewing before the next meeting. Work with them to write down some questions that will help them get a better understanding of the person they are going to portray.

Encourage them to come up with a list of of questions for the schlichim that will help them get to know them well enough to create a portrait.

Questions might include (use these as a guide, not as a specific list to distribute to campers!):

Do you have a favorite sport, food, singer, movie?

What did you like best in high school?

What did you do in the army? Tell us a story from your army service.

What's the craziest thing you ever did with your friends in high school? What would you do if we did the same thing at camp right now?

What do you like about camp?

What do you like about Israel?

What do you miss most from Israel right now?

Encourage each group to think up really creative, crazy questions, but remind them be respectful and not to push too hard in the interviews.

Then send them off to interview the Israeli they're going to portray. Encourage them to bring supplies to the next session, based on what they learn in the interview (maybe a candy wrapper, a button, or anything else they think is appropriate).

At the next session, each group gets a piece of poster board and access to the table filled with random objects, in addition to the objects the campers brought specifically for this project.

Allow 30-45 minutes to create the portraits, and this time let the art staff help a bit more so the finishing touches look good.

Once everyone is done, campers share their work with the Israelis and with each other. You may decide to give the portraits to the Israelis as a gift, or to hang them in a central location in camp. (If you create a display, your camp might decide to give the portraits to the Israelis as going-away gifts at the end of the summer).

Our Israel

This activity also is designed to focus campers' creativity on Israel, but it addresses the group's notions of Israel, rather than the life of one specific Israeli.

Divide campers into groups of 3-5 members and ask them to create a portrait titled "Our Israel."

Don't give too many detailed instructions, so as not to limit creativity, but in response to questions you can say:

This art work need not portray a person

There is room for different ideas and perspectives in the artwork

Base it on your ideas, your knowledge, your dreams, and your jokes

Allow the groups 20 minutes to create "Our Israel" and then 10 minutes to share them with everyone.

Display the creations for all the camp community to see.

Background class="field-label">Explanation:

Stage 1: Introduction

You can introduce The Great Debate by peppering campers with a series of questions about Israel, or asking them to shout out what they think are the key issues facing Israel. After a brief discussion, the GE can shift gears and provide an overview of how the activity is run.

Alternately, you might want to work with a few Israeli and American staff members to prepare a short dramatic presentation designed to demonstrate the role these questions play in daily life in Israel. This skit might entail a few friends meeting in someone's living room on a Friday night to argue about politics, or some similar scenario, to encourage campers to engage in dialogue and debate, and to ask questions.

Questions that can help launch this activity:

What should the borders of Israel look like in a final-status agreement with the Palestinians?

Should Arab citizens of Israel enjoy full rights equal to those of Israeli Jews?

Since Israel is a Jewish state, should the Orthodox Rabbinate keep its role in setting religious policy for all Israeli Jews?

Stage 2: Understanding the Debate

After the introduction of the program, the GE stands alongside a large placard with a variety of symbols and images representing the issues described below. (This can include bumper stickers, reprinted slogans, etc. Bumper sticker images can be selected from here: http://www.jr.co.il/pictures/israel/bstickers/index.html but choose them with care to ensure a mix that reflects the issues that are being discussed). S/He will refer to the images as s/he provides an overview of dilemmas and challenges faced by the State of Israel.

GE: You all have learned about the history of the State of Israel. I don’t want you to think you’ve learned all there is to learn, but I also don’t want you to think that the past is the only thing that matters. There are burning issues on the Israeli agenda, and you have enough knowledge and understanding to begin to wrestle with them.

You could think of daily life in Israel as one Great Debate. Today we’re going to talk about some of those debates that preoccupy Israelis. I’ve got my own opinions on them, but my opinions won’t be the focus right now. I don’t want to tell you what to think; I want you each to think for yourselves. I’ll give the overview, and then each of you will have to decide what’s right, or what you would do if it was up to you to set Israeli policy.

You may choose to introduce the approach by doing a “dry run” of a couple of issues that are hot topics in the U.S. – perhaps the voting age or the drinking age and a question about U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. Next, introduce the issues on the agenda for today (feel free to add, swap, or delete from the following list):

The threat posed by Iran

Territorial compromise

Religion and state

Who is a Jew

Citizenship and rights

Security/civil liberties

Army and society

Israel-Diaspora relations

This introduction will not delve into positions on each issue, but will simply set up the dilemmas or questions.

Stage 3: Staking Out the Positions

Staff members, led by the GE and one or more shlichim (with careful preparation, campers can also make some of these presentations), will then make a brief (2-3 minute) presentation presenting each issue in greater depth. At the conclusion of each presentation, the presenter will posit three statements, and ask campers to choose the one that they agree with most. Cards with the statements will be distributed.

Statements for each dilemma will have a different color and/or shape. By the end of the presentations, each camper will have eight cards representing the positions they chose for each of the dilemmas.

If it seems appropriate, you might ask the campers to share any reflections on the activity to this point. Questions could include:

Were you surprised by your views on any of these issues?

Which issue seems most important to you?

How might you view these issues differently if you lived in Israel?

Stage 4: Finding Points of Agreement

The facilitator notes that everyone has staked out positions on a wide variety of issues, and each camper is unlikely to find many people who agree with them on every issue. This is a lot like Israeli politics, where different parties come together to form a coalition even if they do not agree on every issue.

Instruct the group to take 10 minutes to sort themselves into groups where there is the greatest common ground. Campers can achieve this by looking for similar arrays of cards and by querying each other. Once there are 6-8 groups, a staff person joins each group and leads a discussion about the issues. Since each group will include people with varying views on some of the issues, the staff person will moderate discussion and debate on the points of disagreement.

After 15 minutes, the entire group will reconvene, and the facilitator will solicit varying views on some or all of the dilemmas.

Additionally, if time permits, the culminating discussion can focus on the process of seeking common ground, compromising on multiple issues, etc.

Stage 5: Wrap-up

Questions the facilitator might pose to the entire group during the wrap-up discussion include:

What surprised you most about the discussions you've just had?

Did you find many people who agreed with you on every issue? How do you explain this?

Which issues seem to be the most important?

Do you see any comparison to the relative importance of issues in American society? Why do some issues matter more to us than others?

Were you aware of all of these dilemmas? Which ones were new to you?

Who wants to share a particularly interesting idea about how to tackle one of these issues?

Ideally, campers will discuss the complexity of the issues, the insights they gained by thinking and discussing tough topics, and their own sense of connection to some of the "front-burner issues" that concern Israelis. You might probe a bit why Israeli issues matter to them in the first place, and a few campers might talk about their own connections to Israel.

Finally, consider asking an Israeli staff member to share his or her perspective on the issues. Caution: Prepare the Israeli staff to approach this from the perspective of an observer of Israeli society, rather than sharing their own views on the issues. (If an Israeli espouses a clear perspective on these issues, campers whose views differ may feel marginalized, and campers without strong views might be inclined to fall into step with "the expert").

Campers will leave this activity with deeper awareness, and nuanced views, of key dilemmas facing Israel. Hopefully they will have greater confidence in their own grasp of the issues and how they approach them, but at the same time it is important for them to understand there are many differing views on each of these issues. Dialogue and openness to different ideas - as well as a willingness to advocate for what you believe in - should be enhanced.

Supporting Materials:

mapstorypart1.pdf

mapstorypart2.pdf

mapstorypart3.pdf

mapstorypart4.pdf

Great Debate Briefing Materials.docx

Great Debate - Position Statements.docx

Curricular Subjects:

Threat of Iran

Peace with the Palestinians

Current Events

Current Social Issues

Israel Defense Forces (IDF)

Israel in the World

Thu, 01 Mar 2012 14:46:25 +0000 Carl Schrag 6 at https://goodman.theicenter.org Poster Tales: Yearning for Peace https://goodman.theicenter.org/activities/poster-tales-yearning-peace

Every year on Yom Ha'atzmaut (Independence Day), the State of Israel commissions a poster to commemorate the year. Why do you feel they were missing and why do you think they were left out?

If we were to make a poster for America’s Independence Day, what symbols would you include in that poster?

Stage 2: Yearning for Peace

Explain that the idea of peace is a recurring theme throughout Israel's history and it is often times reflected in Israel's Independence Day posters.

Ask the group:

What symbols or images do you think of when you think of peace?

Why do you think of these images?

Did you notice any of these images when you were walking around during the bingo game?

Allow them to walk around the posters, looking for symbols of peace and bring those posters back to the group.

Ask the group:

Why did you choose these posters as representative of our theme?

What do you see that makes you say that?

Can you point to specific elements or symbols in the poster that make you see that theme?

Are there any symbols that you would have expected to see as representative of our theme that are missing? Why do you think they were not included? What about these symbols makes you want to include them?

Stage 3: 1978, 1995-6, and 2002

Pull out the posters from 1978, 1995, 1996, and 2002 and explain to campers that you want to specifically look at these posters and at what was going on at the time these posters were created. Ask the same two questions listed below.

Hand out to each participant the timeline of Israel’s history.

The 1978 Poster:

Ask your campers these questions (or variations on them):

Why do you think this year in particular was chosen to represent the theme of "yearning for peace"? According to the timeline, what happened right before this poster was created? What happened right after? Why do you think they chose to focus on peace in this year's poster? How is what's going on during the time reflected in this poster?

Based off of what was going on right before and right after this poster was created, how do you think Israelis felt before and after?

Explain: This poster occurred right after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat visited Israel in 1977 as part of the historic peace negotiations between Egypt and Israel. In 1977, Sadat arrived in Jerusalem for a 3-day visit that launched the first peace process between Israel and an Arab state. After Sadat's visit, in 1978, Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin met at Camp David which led to the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace treaty. Since then, peace has prevailed on this mutual border.

The 1995 and 1996 Posters:

Ask the same questions as above.

Explain: The 1995 poster reflects a time in Israel when peace with the Palestinians was on the horizon. This poster was created while Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was in the mist of working towards peace with the signing of peace agreements with the Palestinians and with Jordan. This peace process began to take shape in 1991, when Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Palestinians met in Madrid for the first face-to-face talks. These meetings led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords between the Palestinians and Israel. These talks resulted in an agreement where Gaza and Jericho were turned over to the Palestinian Authority and the IDF would redeploy in the West Bank and evacuate large Palestinian towns.

Ask:

Given what you now know about the peace process, how you think Israelis felt during this time? How is that reflected in the poster?

Explain: The Oslo Agreements sparked controversy within Israel where some people supported the Government's policy while others saw it as an act of surrender. The dispute reached its climax at the end of a peace rally when an extremist Israeli Jew assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. After the assassination, the peace process slowed.

Then, look at the 1996 poster, after Rabin is assassinated.

Ask campers: how are the images in the 1996 poster different than the images in the 1995 poster? Why are the images different?

Explain that the 1996 poster was focused on industry and education. What do you think it says that Israel chose to commemorate the year that Rabin was assassinated with a poster about technology?

The 2002 Poster:

Explain that in July 2002, the U.S., the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia outlined the principles of a "road map" for peace, including an independent Palestinian state. The road map was released in 2003 and called for independent actions by Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with disputed issues that were put off.

Conclude by asking: Looking at the timeline, are there other years where you are surprised the theme "yearning for peace" did not appear? If campers show posters that they think reflect "yearning for peace" look at the timeline and ask similar questions to the original questions. Ask about how what was going on during the time is reflected in the poster.

Stage 4: Art Activity

Hand out poster boards or sheets of white paper to each participant and ask them to create their own poster for Israel this year that fits the theme of the peace group. Encourage them to use the same elements that the Independence Day posters used: symbols, words, pictures, etc. and to make it reflect their own personal connections to Israel.

Stage 5: Wrap-Up

You can choose to conclude this program with another discussion:

If you were to create a poster for the U.S. using the theme of peace, what elements, symbols, drawings, etc., would you include in this poster?

Are there differences in how you would depict this theme for America versus Israel?

Are there differences in how you would relate to a poster for America versus a poster for Israel?

Variations:

Variations in Content:

There are many different themes that can be highlighted in this poster collection.
